To qualify, you must reside in Michigan, be actively enrolled in Michigan Medicaid, and require physical assistance with at least one Activity of Daily Living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, or mobility. You do not need to require a nursing-home level of care, and there is no waitlist once you are approved.

You can apply by submitting a Medical Needs form (DHS-54A) signed by your doctor and completing an application package through MI Bridges. An Adult Services Worker (ASW) from your local MDHHS office will then conduct an in-home assessment to determine how many hours of care you need.

Yes. The program features Consumer Directed Services (CDS), which allows you to hire adult children, siblings, friends, or other relatives. Spouses and parents of minor children cannot act as paid caregivers, and legal guardians are generally prohibited as well.

Caregivers are paid directly by the state. As of 2026, individual caregivers (family/friends) make $17.13 per hour. Caregivers hired through an agency are paid $27.00 per hour which includes the agency's pay. Caregivers must pass a background check and register in the CHAMPS portal.

The program covers two main areas:Personal Care: Bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, toileting, and mobility.

Homemaking: Meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and essential grocery shopping.

No. Home Help covers hands-on daily living assistance and supervision, but it does not cover skilled nursing tasks like wound care, physical therapy, or the administration of medication unless approved under Specialized Service Task. 

The number of authorized weekly hours is determined by the MDHHS caseworker during the initial in-home assessment. Most participants are approved for up to 180 hours of care per month, depending on their specific needs.

Caregivers must use Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) software, such as HHAeXchange, to track and submit their work hours.
